Biography

Hans Sluga is the William Trudy Ausfahl Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His academic work covers a wide range of philosophical interests, integrating both analytic and continental traditions. He earned his initial training in philosophy at the Beethoven Gymnasium in Bonn, and continued his studies at the Universities of Bonn and Munich, where he developed an interest in symbolic logic influenced by the works of Gottlob Frege. His exposure to the thoughts of Martin Heidegger and later discoveries of Wittgenstein at Oxford have shaped his approach significantly. Over the years, Sluga has focused increasingly on political philosophy, particularly what he refers to as the “diagnostic tradition” that spans from Marx and Nietzsche to Carl Schmitt, Hannah Arendt, and Michel Foucault. His ongoing project includes working on a book about political realism, reflecting a commitment to understanding the intricate relationship between history and philosophy.
