Hans Thijssen seeks to open new perspectives on the philosophy of 'big questions' inherent in the human predicament and to help people live a meaningful and happy life. In recent years, he has begun to examine what it means to talk about happiness and to learn from wisdom traditions about achieving a flourishing life. He finds Buddhist philosophy a fruitful complement to the Western tradition, particularly when grappling with issues of personal well-being and sustainability in nature. In 2016, he founded the Radboud Platform Happiness, which brings together professors from various disciplines studying and teaching well-being. Thijssen engages in talks and essays regarding wisdom traditions in both the East and West, aiming to inspire a wider audience toward a happy life and thus contribute to a healthier society. His latest book is titled 'Wat filosofen weten. het verlangen naar geluk en de honger naar kennis'. He received his academic formation from Radboud University, Université Catholique de Louvain, Harvard University, and UC Santa Barbara, and is a recipient of generous research grants from scientific organizations. Thijssen founded the scientific journal 'Early Science Medicine' in 1996 and the Center for History and Philosophy of Science in 1997. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies from 2004 to 2016, and was the Chair of the National Council for Philosophy from 2013 to 2016.
