Biography

Hanspeter Liniger is an Associated Senior Research Scientist at the Centre Development Environment (CDE) at the University of Bern. He serves as the Director of the global network and initiative called World Overview on Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). His professional focus includes the evaluation and dissemination of sustainable land management (SLM) practices, decision support, and the upscaling of SLM practices to address local and regional impacts. He specializes in dryland watershed management, erosion risk mapping, and the effectiveness of conservation practices while also teaching and supervising students and training professionals. Liniger has over 10 years of field experience in Kenya focusing on water conservation and watershed management, conducting training courses on documentation, evaluation, and dissemination of SLM in collaboration with local partner organizations across Central Asia, Mongolia, China, Africa, and Mediterranean countries. He is fluent in German, English, French, and has basic spoken proficiency in Kiswahili. His extensive network affiliations include being a Director and honorary fellow at WOCAT, and he actively mentors MSc and PhD students in implementation research at various institutions worldwide.
