Biography

Hany El Naggar is a Professor in GeoStructural and Geotechnical Engineering at Dalhousie University, with over 25 years of experience in civil construction and geotechnical structural engineering research both in Canada and abroad. He has participated in numerous geotechnical studies and has extensive expertise in the analysis and design of foundations, soil-structure interaction (SSI), and buried infrastructure. As the inaugural Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, he developed resources to strengthen student-supervisor relationships, emphasizing the critical importance of student success. El Naggar has led extensive studies on the effects of SSI on buried infrastructure, pioneering the use of tire-derived aggregate (TDA) to create stress arching that reduces the demand on rigid pipes and culverts. His research has influenced significant revisions to seismic provisions in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. He has authored over 250 technical publications in SSI and resilient infrastructure. El Naggar's contributions have been recognized internationally, culminating in the prestigious 2024 G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society for his outstanding contributions to soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
