Dr. Hao Wu

Biography

Hao Wu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Specializing in epigenetics, his research focuses on understanding the processes by which multicellular organisms regulate gene expression, establish diverse cell types, and respond to changing environmental signals. His laboratory employs a combination of experimental techniques, including biochemical, molecular, genetic, and genomic assays, along with bioinformatics, to explore the intricacies of cell-type specification and maturation in mammalian stem cells, particularly in cardiovascular and neural lineages. His ultimate goal is to analyze and engineer cell-type-specific epigenomes to inform therapeutic approaches for human diseases. Additionally, he seeks to develop new genomic sequencing tools for mapping and manipulating epigenetic modifications within complex mammalian genomes. Wu's extensive training includes postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and UCLA, where he worked on various aspects of stem cell and regenerative biology. He has contributed significantly to understanding the role of DNA cytosine methylation and the mechanisms through which environmental factors can dynamically influence gene expression and developmental processes.
