Biography

Hao Zhang is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta, specializing in Chemical Materials Engineering. He has been at the university since September 2007 after completing a postdoctoral research associate position at Princeton University. He holds a B.E. and M.S. degrees in Materials Science Engineering from Tsinghua University and a PhD in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. His research primarily focuses on computational theoretical materials science with an emphasis on understanding the static and dynamic properties of defects and their relation to the thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanical properties of materials. Noteworthy areas of research include identifying cooperative motion in strongly interacting particle systems and investigating the fundamental mechanisms behind elastic and plastic deformation in metallic glasses. He also develops models for crack growth rates in pipeline steel due to hydrogen embrittlement and evaluates the mechanical response of nanostructured materials, including designing high-capacity hydrotalcite for CO2 capture.
