Dr. Harald Bathelt

Biography

Harald Bathelt is a Professor in the Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Toronto, where he holds the Zijiang Visiting Chair at East China Normal University in Shanghai. His research focuses on Economic Geography and Political Economy, with particular emphasis on industrial clustering, the dynamics of knowledge generation and innovation at a distance, and the regional impacts of foreign direct investments. He has published extensively, contributing significant conceptual and empirical articles to leading academic journals, and has received a notable 22,000 citations on Google Scholar. His recent works include books on knowledge creation and the relational economy, which rigorously examine the factors influencing regional economic development and inequality. Bathelt’s teaching covers various courses that engage students with contemporary issues in political economy and statistical analysis, promoting a critical understanding of how knowledge and resources can spur regional development in today’s interconnected economy.
