Biography

Harald Bugmann is a Full Professor at ETH Zurich in the Department of Environmental Systems Science, specializing in Mountain Forest Ecology. He completed his M.Sc. in limnology and earned his Ph.D. in ecological biology at ETH Zurich, where he was supervised by Professors Hannes Flühler and Andreas Fischlin. His research encompasses the impacts of climatic change on mountain forests, particularly in the Alps, where he has studied long-term dynamics and disturbance regimes. Prior to his current position, he was a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and worked on Rocky Mountain forest ecology at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, USA. He has been actively involved in several international research initiatives, including the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and the Mountain Research Initiative, and has contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Assessment Reports. He received various honors, including the Transdisciplinarity Award from the Swiss Academies and the Medal for his PhD thesis from ETH Zurich.
