Biography

Harald Hendrix is an emeritus professor of Italian Studies at Utrecht University, holding the chair in Italian Studies from 2001 to 2025. Prior to this, he served as an associate professor in Renaissance Studies in the Department of Comparative Literature from 1994 to 2001. His administrative roles include director of the Netherlands Research School in Literary Studies from 2002 to 2006, head of the department of Modern Languages from 2007 to 2012, and director of the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome from 2014 to 2019. Hendrix’s academic background encompasses cultural history and comparative literature with a specialization in Italian Studies. His research primarily focuses on the European reception of Italian Renaissance and Baroque culture. Hendrix has published extensively, including works on early-modern aesthetics and cultural memory. His recent publications include "Writers' Houses Making Memory" and collaborative works discussing the influence of artistic culture during the Reformation. He is currently preparing a book on the cultural history of writers’ houses in Italy from Petrarch to the present day.
