Dr. Harald Luksch

Biography

Prof. Harald Luksch is a prominent figure in the field of neurobiology, focusing his research on sensory processing in the brains of vertebrates. His laboratory emphasizes the study of neuronal networks in the midbrain, particularly in relation to sensory organs and body orientation, with a specific emphasis on eye movements. The overarching goal of his research is to gain a mechanistic understanding of processes like object selection and the integration of multimodal stimuli, and to apply these findings in developing algorithms for technical applications. He completed his Magister in Biology at the University of Bonn in 1990 and obtained a doctorate from the University of Cologne in 1994. Following his doctorate, Prof. Luksch conducted postdoctoral research in Bremen and San Diego, and earned his post-doctoral teaching qualification at RWTH Aachen in 2002. He was appointed the Chair of Zoology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2007 and currently heads the university's interdisciplinary Leonardo da Vinci Center for Bionics. Additionally, he plays an active role at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience and the Graduate School of Systemic Neuroscience. In 2016, he took on the role of Dean of Studies for the Biosciences at the TUM School of Life Sciences.
