Biography

Hardeep Dhillon is currently an Assistant Professor of Asian American History at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is a core faculty member of the Asian American Studies Program. Her research primarily investigates legal status as an analytical tool to study how rights, resources, and privileges are distributed in society, with a particular focus on how legal status has historically been utilized as a proxy for race to structure inequality in the United States. Dhillon's book project examines how Americans have historically used the legal status of immigrant parents to limit their children’s rights and claims to birthright citizenship. Her research has been published in leading historical journals and public forums, including the Journal of American History, Historical Journal, and Modern American History. In recognition of her teaching excellence, she was awarded the Richard S. Dunn Award for Distinguished Teaching by the Standing Faculty at Penn. Prior to her appointment at Penn, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the American Bar Foundation and earned her doctorate in History from Harvard University, where she also studied Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.
