Biography

Haresh Sapra is the Charles T. Horngren Professor of Accounting at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He studies the real effects of accounting measurement policies, disclosure regulation, and corporate governance. His extensive research addresses issues related to disclosure, transparency, and financial reporting in financial institutions. Notably, he investigates how accounting measurement rules impact the optimal design of prudential regulation for financial institutions and examines the connection between accounting and prudential regulation. His current research focuses on the role of mark-to-market accounting in bank stability. Sapra's work has been published in renowned journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Accounting Economics. He has appeared in prominent media outlets such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg. He also serves as an editor for the Journal of Accounting Research. Throughout his career, Sapra has received several teaching awards and has been recognized as a top-ranked professor by BusinessWeek. He teaches MBA electives on 'Deal Structuring Financial Reporting Implications' and financial accounting courses for Executive MBA students as well as economic modeling accounting issues for PhD students. Sapra earned his PhD in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota in 2000 and subsequently joined the Chicago Booth faculty. He is also an accomplished marathon runner, having completed thirty marathons with a personal best time of 2:53:06 and is a 6-star finisher of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
