Biography

Harold Craighead received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with High Honors from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1974 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University in 1980. His thesis work involved an experimental study of metal nanoparticles. He began his career at Bell Laboratories as a Member of the Technical Staff in the Device Physics Research Department from 1979 to 1984, followed by a role as Research Manager in the Quantum Structures Research Group at Bellcore until 1989. In 1989, he joined Cornell University as a Professor in the School of Applied and Engineering Physics, where he has held various leadership positions, including Director of the National Nanofabrication Facility and the Nanobiotechnology Center. He served as the Interim Dean of the College of Engineering from 2001 to 2002 and has been influential in advancing nanofabrication methods and applications in engineered nanosystems. He is a pioneer in the field and has contributed over 280 published papers. His recent research focuses on nanofabricated devices for biological applications, with ongoing projects in biosensors, epigenetic analysis, and single molecule studies.
