Biography

Harriet Bulkeley holds joint appointments as Professor in the Department of Geography at Durham University and at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. Her research primarily focuses on environmental governance, politics, climate change, and energy, particularly in the context of sustainable cities. Over the years, she has published eight books and edited collections, alongside sixty papers, with notable works including 'Urban Politics Climate Change' (Routledge, 2015) and 'Accomplishing Climate Governance' (CUP, 2016). Bulkeley has been recognized as one of the highly cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics/Thompson Reuters in 2016 and 2017. She currently coordinates the H2020 NATURVATION project, which examines the role of urban innovation and nature-based solutions in sustainable development, and serves as a co-investigator on the H2020 REINVENT project focusing on the political and financial challenges of decarbonization. Her research has involved commissioned work for various entities, including the UK Government, European Commission, NGOs, UN-Habitat, OECD, and the World Bank. In 2014, she was awarded the King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Professorship in Environmental Science as a Visiting Professorship at Lund University, Sweden, and received the Back Award from the Royal Geographical Society in 2018 for her impactful work on climate change policy. In 2019, she was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
