Biography

Harry J. Elam, Jr. is the Olive H. Palmer Professor of Humanities at Stanford University, where he also serves as the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. He has authored and edited seven books, including 'Taking Streets: Social Protest Theater' and 'African American Performance and Theater History: A Critical Reader'. His research interests span performance studies, African American drama, and directing. Elam has served on the editorial boards of multiple prestigious journals and received numerous accolades including the Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Society for Theatre Research. A seasoned director, he has directed plays for twenty years and has won eight Bay Area 'Choice' Awards. Elam received his AB from Harvard College in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984.
