Biography

Hartmut Kühne is a Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Near Eastern Archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin, specializing in Near Eastern antiquities and archaeology. He completed his academic studies in Near Eastern archaeology, classical archaeology, and ancient history at Freie Universität Berlin from 1963 to 1972, where he earned his doctorate in 1972 with a dissertation on the pottery of Tell Chuera. He served as a professor for Near Eastern archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin from 1980 until his retirement in 2010. Post-retirement, he has continued to work as a senior visiting professor at the same institution. His research interests focus on field archaeology, historical geography, and the analysis of ancient environmental changes. Kühne has engaged in multiple excavation projects in the Near East and has published extensively in the field, contributing to various archaeological series and leading significant research projects related to environmental reconstruction in ancient urban settings.
