Biography

Harvey P. Dale is a University Professor at New York University School of Law, specializing in Philanthropy Law and serving as the Director of the National Center for Philanthropy Law. With a background in international tax law, he pioneered the development of the Program in Philanthropy Law in 1986, examining legal issues that affect nonprofit organizations. His work at the National Center addresses a wide range of legal issues pertinent to the nonprofit sector, serving as an academic forum for the integrated examination of legal doctrines regarding charitable organizations. Over the years, Dale has served as an advisor to various governmental bodies and nonprofit organizations worldwide, including consultations for entities in Australia, China, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. He has published multiple articles focusing on tax exemption, international grantmaking, and issues related to unrelated business income tax. Dale’s commitment to the field is evidenced by his role as founding president of Atlantic Philanthropies and his membership in prestigious organizations such as the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Moreover, he played a vital role as an adviser to the American Law Institute on the Restatement of the Law of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017.
