Biography

Harwin de Vries is an Associate Professor in the Department of Technology Operations Management at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research primarily focuses on health and humanitarian logistics, with a particular emphasis on disaster relief logistics. He collaborates extensively with more than twenty humanitarian and health organizations, examining how key decisions within health and humanitarian supply chains—such as location, inventory management, routing, planning, allocation, and assignment—affect patients and beneficiaries. Harwin is particularly interested in the role of data and prescriptive analytics in developing new operating models within these sectors. His teaching portfolio includes courses on Health and Humanitarian Logistics at both MSc and MBA levels, Business Analytics for EMBA students, and Spreadsheet Modelling for undergraduate and pre-MSc students. He has been recognized with awards such as the 2021 ERIM Award for Outstanding Performance as a Young Researcher and the 2022 NWO VENI grant. He has published extensively in leading scientific journals such as Production and Operations Management, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and the International Journal of Operations & Production Management. Harwin has also served on the board of the POMS College of Humanitarian Operations & Crisis Management.
