Biography

Hashim M. Al-Hashimi is a Roy Diana Vagelos Professor at Columbia University within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and grew up in Greece, Italy, Jordan, and the UK. He graduated from Yale University with a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry in 2000. His research focuses on the development of predictive models that elucidate the cellular processes governed by nucleic acids and their interactions with protein binding partners using advanced NMR methodologies and computational modeling. Al-Hashimi has contributed significantly to the understanding of the dynamics of RNA and DNA, leading his lab to discover mechanisms behind error rates in biological processes, including DNA replication and HIV-1 transcriptional activation. He is known for fostering a supportive environment for his trainees, having trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to lead research laboratories worldwide. Al-Hashimi co-founded Nymirum Inc in 2009, which focuses on RNA-targeted drug discovery.
