Biography

Hashim Sarkis has been the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since January 2015. Previously, he was the Aga Khan Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He has held various visiting positions worldwide, including at the American University of Beirut and the Metropolis Program in Barcelona. Sarkis is also the principal architect of Hashim Sarkis Studios, a firm based in Beirut, established in 1998, where he works on a range of architectural and planning projects including affordable housing and institutional buildings. His notable works include the Byblos Town Hall Courtowers and the Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, which highlighted projects like the Housing for Fishermen in Tyre. An accomplished author, he has written extensively on modern architecture and urban design, including books on significant architects and historical contexts. Dean Sarkis holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as a Master of Architecture and a Ph.D. in Architecture from Harvard University, focusing on the intersection of design and democracy.
