Hayden Schilling is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and a Fisheries Scientist with the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. His research interest encompasses fish biology and coastal freshwater ecology, with a strong emphasis on statistics, particularly related to species targeted by fishers. Currently, Schilling's research is concentrated on long-term changes in fish populations within the Murray-Darling Basin. Previously, he studied the mechanisms influencing fisheries production in eastern Australia's oceanic environments, focusing on transport mechanisms related to fisheries catch. He has been involved in various projects analyzing whale entanglements, crab fisheries, barnacle ecology, and artificial reefs, as well as otolith shape analysis. Schilling completed his PhD studying tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix) in eastern Australia, supervised by UNSW and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. He engages closely with New South Wales and Queensland Fisheries to enhance ecological understanding and develop effective management plans for sustaining fish populations in the future.
