Dr. Haym Hirsh

Biography

Haym Hirsh is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University, where he is also a member of the graduate fields of Information Science and Cognitive Science. He has an extensive academic background, having obtained a BS in Mathematics from UCLA in 1983, followed by an MS in Computer Science in 1985 and a PhD in 1989 from a Computer Science Department. He initially spent time as faculty at the University of Pittsburgh before joining Rutgers University, where he served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Director of the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems at the National Science Foundation. In 2012, he returned to academia and took on roles including the Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Science and faculty director of Cornell's Master of Engineering program in Computer Science. His research primarily focuses on the foundations and applications of machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, and artificial intelligence, with recent interests including crowdsourcing, human computation, and social computing. Hirsh has taught various courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing. He has held significant service positions within professional organizations, contributing to conferences and editorial boards, and was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His career is marked by a dedication to both teaching and research, as well as a commitment to advancing the field of computer science through innovative research and collaboration.
