Dr. Heather Brom

Biography

Heather Brom is a health services researcher focused on improving health outcomes for individuals with complex medical and social needs. Her research emphasizes examining variations in organizational factors and policies that impact the practice environment of nurses and nurse practitioners, aiming to influence health outcomes directly. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement multi-level solutions such as system-level interventions. Her work has notably demonstrated the relationship between nurse work environments and patient outcomes, particularly in cases of ischemic stroke how staffing levels and supportive environments can affect readmissions and length of stay. Dr. Brom is involved in initiatives that aim to provide necessary support to high-risk patients, especially those undergoing blood and stem cell transplants. As a member of Penn Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes Policy Research, she participates in educating and mentoring students and faculty interested in nursing and health services research. Her collaborative efforts also include the development of the THRIVE intervention to support post-discharge needs of Medicaid-insured patients, highlighting her commitment to health equity and quality care.
