Dr. Heather Buckley

Biography

Heather Buckley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria. Her academic journey includes a Master of Science degree from the University of British Columbia and a Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. She specializes in green chemistry and molecular sensors aimed at detecting water contaminants, focusing on safer prevention of biofouling in water treatment systems. Buckley advocates for responsible development of greener technologies as a core component in improving both human health and environmental well-being. Her research involves designing tools for environmental monitoring and developing proactive strategies that utilize safer alternatives, thereby empowering communities and industrial partners in environmental stewardship. She is particularly interested in the introduction of metal contaminants through human activity and is working on creating selective sensor molecules for in-field detection of such contaminants in water. Furthermore, she aims to enhance water treatment technologies by integrating low-hazard antimicrobials into membrane structures, improving both efficacy and safety in water treatment processes. Buckley also investigates economic opportunities in the recycling of electronic waste and the remediation of conventional waste streams, aligning her work with the principles of sustainability and public health.
