Biography

Heather Hamill's research primarily focuses on establishing trust and reputation in low trust environments, particularly in contexts associated with high crime neighborhoods and illegal political organizations. Her work involves investigating how individuals and organizations establish trustworthiness in informal justice and policing settings. Notably, she has conducted research in Northern Ireland regarding taxi drivers and the dynamics of trust between drivers and customers, as well as the recruitment mechanisms of members into illegal political organizations. Currently, her research addresses issues related to the trust problems caused by the proliferation of sub-standard falsified (SF) medicines in sub-Saharan Africa. She has served as a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow and has been awarded grants from the Russell Sage Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Nuffield Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust. Her notable publications include 'Streetwise: Taxi Drivers Establish Customers' Trustworthiness' and 'Hoods: Crime and Punishment in Belfast'.
