Biography

Heather Melichar is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Montreal, where she leads the research unit focused on the development and function of T cells. Her academic work predominantly investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate T cell development and function, applying this knowledge to enhance the effectiveness of cellular therapies. Dr. Melichar employs a combination of advanced techniques, including multi-parametric flow cytometry and two-photon microscopy, to study T cell interactions within the thymic microenvironment during both developmental and immune response phases. Current research projects in her lab aim to define thymic selection thresholds, explore the impact of self-antigens presented by various types of thymic epithelium on negative selection, and characterize novel protein-protein interactions between T cells and tumor cells to identify potential therapeutic targets in cancer treatment. Over the years, she has received significant research funding and has led numerous studies aimed at understanding T cell dynamics and enhancing cancer immunotherapy efficacy.
