Biography

Heather Sears is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Her research primarily focuses on various aspects of adolescent development, with a particular emphasis on help-seeking behavior among adolescents. She investigates how individual characteristics related to gender and relational dynamics influence adolescents' decisions to seek help from parents, siblings, and peers when managing problems. Additionally, Heather studies the interactions between families and adolescents, especially how parents support youths during both normative events, such as discussions about sexual health, and non-normative events, like dealing with a parent's serious illness. With degrees from Acadia University and the University of Victoria, she is a licensed psychologist in New Brunswick and is involved in graduate supervision.
