Biography

Heba Sailem is a Reader and Wellcome Career Development Fellow at King’s College London, where her research focuses on the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools to enable precise and data-driven treatment strategies for cancer patients. She leads a research program that develops AI methods to identify digital biomarkers, uncover underlying biological mechanisms and pave the way for the generation of cancer diagnostics. Her group is dedicated to improving access to healthcare through effective and ethically designed AI tools. Emphasizing responsible data use, transparency, and fairness in algorithmic design, her aim is to ensure that these technologies benefit patients and foster trust in AI-driven healthcare. Notable tools developed by her team include an AI Histopathology Explorer, a public dashboard evaluating AI-based histopathology studies, ShapoGraphy for visualizing phenotypic data, and TissuePlot for visualizing spatial transcriptomics data. Prior to her role at King’s College London, she held research fellowships at the University of Oxford and University of Zurich and developed machine learning techniques to improve the interpretability of large-scale biomedical image data. Heba earned her PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research in London and holds a BSc in Computer Information Systems and an MSc in Data Warehousing and Data Mining.
