Biography

Professor Carrillo has a joint appointment in the Sociology Department and the Gender & Sexuality Studies Program at Northwestern University. He is affiliated with Latina/o Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the Institute for Policy Research. As the founder and past co-director of the Sexualities Project Northwestern (SPAN), he promotes interdisciplinary research and education in sexuality. His authored books include 'Night Young: Sexuality Mexico Time AIDS' and 'Pathways Desire: Sexual Migration Mexican Gay Men', both published by the University of Chicago Press. He received the 2020 American Sociological Association (ASA) Distinguished Scholarly Book Award. His current research investigates amateur genealogists' interactions with archival documents and the implications of the proliferation of genealogy as a global phenomenon. He has also conducted research on the experiences of straight-identified men who are sexually interested in women and men. Carrillo has a significant history of involvement with HIV/AIDS community-based organizations, and he served as past chair of the Sociology Sexualities Section of the ASA and as senior editor for the journal Theory and Society.
