Dr. Hector Macqueen

Biography

Hector MacQueen is an Emeritus Professor of Private Law at Edinburgh Law School. With a distinguished career that began with his appointment to the law school in 1979, he became a Chair in Private Law in 1994 and served as Dean of the Law School from 1999 to 2003. Over the years, he has held numerous key positions, including Deputy Head of the University from 2004 to 2008. A notable period of his career was marked by a leave of absence from January 2010 to September 2017, during which he contributed to the Scottish Law Commission. He returned to full-time teaching in October 2017 and officially retired on 31 August 2021, becoming Emeritus Professor. Professor MacQueen has made significant contributions to legal scholarship and has been actively involved in academia, having held visiting positions at Cornell University, Utrecht University, and Stetson University College of Law. He is recognized as a Fellow of several prestigious societies, including the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Academy, where he chaired the Law section from 2016 to 2020. He has been actively involved in legal history, and his scholarship has been acknowledged with a CBE in 2019.
