Biography

Hedy Alavi is a teaching professor and the Associate Dean of Global Partnerships at the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University. She serves as the Program Chair for the Environmental Engineering, Science, Management, and Sustainability Programs. With expertise in hazardous solid waste engineering management, Alavi previously led the Design Certification Division of the Solid Waste Program at the Maryland Department of the Environment. She is actively involved as a chief examiner in the State of Maryland and Washington, D.C. for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists and is a registered Professional Engineer. Throughout her career, Alavi has received numerous accolades for her teaching and public service, including the 2007 JHU Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award and the 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Johns Hopkins Engineering Professionals. Her academic qualifications include a bachelor's degree from Jundi Shapour University, a master's and PhD in civil engineering from Ohio State University, and an MBA in management from Johns Hopkins University.
