Biography

Hedy Law is an Associate Professor in Musicology and Acting Director at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. She completed her Ph.D. in Music Theory History at the University of Chicago in 2007 and has worked at UBC since 2012. Her research focuses on eighteenth-century French spectacles, the French Enlightenment, gender studies, Cantonese opera music, and the contributions of Chinese immigrants in the Pacific Northwest. Law has published extensively, including a monograph titled "Music, Pantomime, Freedom: Enlightenment France," and her work appears in various prestigious journals. She has received funding and fellowships, including the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship from the American Musicological Society. Law has held significant roles within the American Musicological Society, such as co-convenor of the Global Music History Study Group, and she actively participates in academic conferences. She has previously taught at Southern Methodist University, where she was honored with the Rotunda Outstanding Professors Award. In addition to her teaching and research, Law serves as the Graduate Advisor and is involved in committees related to music and education.
