Dr. Heidi Ballard

Biography

Heidi Ballard is a Professor in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis, where she is also the Founder and Faculty Director of the Center for Community and Citizen Science. Her research focuses on environmental education, citizen science, and participatory action research, emphasizing public participation in scientific research (PPSR) and its implications for informal science education. She is particularly interested in how community involvement shapes scientific inquiry and enhances environmental action. Ballard has extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development, having worked both as a consultant and educator in various capacities. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from UC Berkeley, and an M.A. in Teaching Biological Sciences from Miami University. Ballard’s work has been recognized through multiple grants and awards, including the UC Davis Chancellor's Fellow designation. She actively engages with diverse communities to foster science learning through citizen science initiatives and has authored numerous publications on these topics. In her role, she not only contributes to theoretical research but also supports the development of practical educational approaches that promote ecological stewardship among students and community members.
