Dr. Heidi Burdett

Biography

Heidi Burdett is an Associate Professor at Umeå University, focusing on the fundamental mechanisms of photosynthesis in coastal marine environments and their applications for sustainable conservation. Her research primarily addresses critical coastal sustainability challenges, habitat restoration, carbon burial, and biodiversity loss. She examines how crucial coastal ecosystem engineers, such as seaweeds, mangroves, and corals, adapt to environmental changes from both natural variability and human activities. Her work emphasizes the extreme light environments present in deep mesophotic regions of the Baltic Sea. Burdett employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating field observations, laboratory experiments, and computational modeling, supported by the advanced infrastructure at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science and Umeå Marine Sciences Centre.
