Biography

Hein de Haas is a sociologist and geographer who has lived and worked in the Netherlands, Morocco, and the United Kingdom. He is currently a Professor of Sociology at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), part of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Between 2006 and 2015, he was a founding member and co-director of the International Migration Institute (IMI) at the University of Oxford, where he continues to direct work related to migration. De Haas has advanced a new, long-term view that positions migration as an intrinsic part of global change and development. He is a lead author of the seminal textbook 'The Age of Migration: International Population Movements in the Modern World,' which is pivotal in the field of migration studies. His new book, 'Migration Works: A Factful Guide to the Divisive Issue of Politics,' is set to be published by Penguin in November 2023, with translations in several languages including German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, and Korean.
