Biography

Heinz Klug is the John Rylla Bosshard Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin Law School. A member of the inactive California Bar and an admitted Advocate in South Africa, he grew up in Durban and participated in the anti-apartheid struggle, which led to 11 years of exile before returning to South Africa in 1990. He served as a member of the ANC Land Commission and was a researcher for Zola Skweyiya, the chairperson of the ANC Constitutional Committee. He was part of a World Bank mission on South Africa's Land Reform and Rural Restructuring. Klug has taught law at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg from 1991-1996, imparting knowledge on Public International Law, Human Rights Law, Property Law, and the Introduction to South African Law, while also working as a legal advisor for the South African Ministry of Water Affairs and Forestry. Honored with a Doctor Honoris Causa from Hasselt University, Belgium, in 2013, he has presented lectures and papers on topics such as the South African constitution and land reform across various countries including Australia, Belgium, and the United States. His research interests encompass constitutional transitions, constitution-building, human rights, and international legal regimes concerning natural resources.
