Biography

Heinz Werner Wessler is a Professor of Indology at Uppsala University, focusing on modern South Asian languages and cultures while continuing the tradition of teaching and researching South Asian linguistics and philology. He began teaching Sanskrit in 1838 and has a background in classical Indology. His academic journey spans studies in Indology, Comparative Religion, and Musicology across Bonn, Delhi, and Zurich. He was a post-doctoral fellow before becoming a visiting professor in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2014. Wessler served on the board of the European Association of South Asian Studies from 2010 to 2016 and was re-elected in 2021. He has also been involved with several academic journals and has received multiple awards for his contributions to Hindi scholarship. With a commitment to promoting the study of South Asia, he maintains an active role in various academic forums and has published extensively in several languages including English, German, Hindi, and Urdu.
