Heleen Murre-van den Berg conducts research on Christians in the Middle East and focuses on the history of the settlement of Christians in Europe. Language, literature, and imagery play an important role in her research on religious practices. She has published on a variety of topics related to Middle Eastern Christians, including Syriac Christians (Syriac, Chaldean, Assyrian) and their exchanges with Western and Middle Eastern Christians. Issues concerning language, scribal practices, literature, identity nationalism, and ritual religious practices are her main focus areas. Her work primarily addresses the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, although her recent research has concentrated on twentieth-century Christian history. In October 2019, she started a new ERC-funded research project entitled 'Rewriting Global Orthodoxy: Oriental Christians in Europe, 1970-2020.' This project investigates the transnational practices of Oriental Orthodox Christians as they settled in Europe over the past fifty years, emphasizing how writing and publishing practices facilitate the transmission of religious heritage in an increasingly globalized context.
