Helen ApSimon, CBE, is a Professor of Air Pollution Studies at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on air pollution and includes the development of modeling studies of nuclear accidents and various international issues related to acid rain and air pollution problems in Eastern Europe. ApSimon has worked extensively with Task Forces of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, conducting modeling assessments of cost-effective strategies aimed at reducing acidification, eutrophication, excess tropospheric ozone, and fine particulate concentrations. She led the Integrated Assessment Unit at the Centre for Environmental Policy, where she investigated future scenarios of emissions, atmospheric dispersion, and the impacts of atmospheric pollutants on human health and ecosystems, as well as assessing the costs and benefits of potential air pollution mitigation strategies. Currently, her work with Defra is focused on analyzing scenarios for air pollution in the UK by 2050, accounting for synergies with climate policies necessary for achieving net zero, and aiding in the development of national air pollution control strategies post-Brexit. ApSimon has a strong interest in urban air pollution, especially in London, and co-founded the Air Pollution Research London (APRIL) network. She is also an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Air Quality Management.
