Dr. Helen Bennion

Biography

Helen Bennion is a Professor of Environmental Change at University College London. She has been involved in research and teaching within the Department of Geography since 1985. Her research interests focus on aquatic ecology and palaeoecology, particularly the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on lakes over time scales. She uses lake sediment records to assess environmental change and establish reference conditions for restoration targets. Bennion completed her BA in Geography at UCL and went on to gain a PhD in 1993, where her research examined sediment records from eutrophic ponds in southeastern England. After that, she was awarded a post-doctoral Royal Society Research Fellowship, spending a year at the Institute of Limnology in Mondsee, Austria. She returned to UCL in 1995 as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Environmental Change, later promoted to Principal Research Associate. She became a Reader in Environmental Change in 2011 and a Professor in 2017. Bennion is also an Associate Editor for the Journal of Paleolimnology and the Chair of the International Paleolimnology Association. To date, she has published 80 academic articles and 70 research reports, and she actively reviews for numerous international scientific journals and funding bodies.
