Dr. Helen Bond

Biography

Professor Helen Bond is a leading scholar in the field of Christian origins, with a focused interest in the historical Jesus and the social, cultural, and religious contexts in which early Christianity emerged. Her recent work includes a critical examination of Mark's Gospel, which she explores as one of the earliest biographies of Jesus, analyzing the literary form and its implications for understanding how Jesus was perceived by his followers. Bond has contributed extensively to the academic community through books and articles that address various figures in the Christian narrative, including Pilate, Caiaphas, and Barabbas, which have been informed by her appreciation of historical texts such as those of Josephus. She is also the editor of volumes discussing the reception of the Synoptic Gospels and has a strong commitment to public engagement through media appearances and public lectures, promoting the study of early Christianity. Since joining the University of Edinburgh in 2000, she has played a key role in developing the Centre for the Study of Christian Origins and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
