Biography

Helen Brown’s research employs community-based participatory methods to promote health equity and wellbeing among incarcerated Indigenous Peoples in Western Canada. Her work focuses on healthcare within carceral settings, aiming to support both individual and community health priorities, cultural continuity, and language revitalization. She engages with Indigenous Elders, community members, and organizations, including the Correctional Service Canada. Brown leads a research program in partnership with Correctional Service Canada and the Tsilhqot'in Nation, investigating the impacts of a prison-community partnership on the health and rehabilitation of Indigenous inmates. In addition, she collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to explore intersections between health and justice and strives to enhance nursing education and maternal-child health for rural and remote women. Brown is dedicated to improving social inclusion and safety for marginalized groups, particularly focused on the health and wellbeing of women in the Cowichan Valley.
