Studying archaeology as part of her undergraduate degree led Helen directly into the field of Conservation. She worked on excavations in Roman London and Bristol’s waterfront before moving to Toronto. In 1987, Helen joined the staff at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) focusing on the conservation of arms, armor, and the new European Gallery. Over the years, she became increasingly involved in environmental control and materials testing, ultimately becoming the ROM’s Preventive Conservation specialist in 2006. During her time at the ROM, Helen has dealt with a variety of materials including armor, plastics, textiles, and ethnographic material, focusing on climate control for object display and storage, pest control, and the safe use of materials in the conservation of collections. She has a particular interest in indoor air quality, examining how temperature, humidity, air pollutants, and particulates affect artifact materials.
