Dr. Helen Hughes

Biography

Helen Kinsman Hughes serves as the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Johns Hopkins Medicine, specifically at the Pediatric Telemedicine division within the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. She has extensive experience in medical informatics and co-chairs the Patient Family Centered Design committee. Hughes is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her academic journey includes an undergraduate degree from Haverford College and a Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Additionally, she earned a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Hughes has completed her residency in pediatrics, where she served as Chief Resident, and has held a research fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics. She is known nationally for her leadership in telemedicine and patient-facing digital health technologies, receiving accolades like the AAMC’s Telehealth Equity Catalyst Award. Her involvement extends to serving as a co-editor for the 21st Edition of the Harriet Lane Handbook, which is widely utilized in pediatric training programs across the U.S. Hughes actively participates in the American Telemedicine Association's Clinician Council, focusing on the development of clinical practice guidelines in the telehealth field.
