Biography

Helen McCartney is a Reader in Defence Studies at King's College London. She joined the Defence Studies Department in 2000, having previously held the position of Scouloudi Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research and worked as a research assistant for the King’s Research Unit on Combat Syndromes. McCartney holds a BA from the University of Warwick and both an MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on British civil-military relations and contemporary historical perspectives. She is the author of the book 'Citizen Soldiers' (2005) and co-authored 'Somme' with Robert T. Foley (2006). Additionally, McCartney has published articles in significant journals such as the British Medical Journal, British Journal of Psychiatry, and International Affairs. Currently, she is researching the new social and cultural history of the World Wars and is working on a series of articles about the contemporary relationship between the armed forces and British society. She is also involved as a co-investigator in a joint project examining the ‘lessons learned’ by the UK armed forces. Her knowledge exchange activities include reports for the Department of Defense and she has served as a councillor for the Army Records Society and as a historical advisor for the Soldiers Oxfordshire Museum.
