Biography

Helen Monkman is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Advisor at the University of Victoria's School of Health Information Science. She holds a BSc and MA from Carleton University and a PhD from the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on improving consumer health information systems to make them easier for people to use and understand, empowering individuals to make informed health decisions and engage in conversations with healthcare providers. Monkman's work has included collaborations with various Canadian health organizations, conducting evaluations of consumer health information systems and mobile health applications. Her interests also encompass usability engineering, patient engagement, and the evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of health information systems. In addition, Monkman is involved in promoting health literacy and addressing the challenges faced by individuals with limited eHealth literacy in navigating health information.
