Dr. Helen Moore

Biography

Helen Moore is a Professor of English Literature and Tutorial Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Her research investigates the intersections of cultures, periods, and disciplines, focusing on the reception of English and continental European classical literature. She has contributed to the academic discourse through two scholarly editions, including the sixteenth-century prose romance 'Amadis de Gaule' and the seventeenth-century play 'Guy Warwick'. Her book 'Amadis in English: A Study in Reading Romance' examines the long-standing popularity of the Spanish romance 'Amadís de Gaula' among British readers. Recognized for her contributions to literature, she was a joint winner of the British Academy's 2021 Rose Mary Crawshay Prize and received the Roland H. Bainton Prize from the Sixteenth Century Society. Moore's scholarly efforts encompass the interlinking literary cultures of early modern England and France, with a focus on Tudor and Jacobean drama and medieval romance. She has also worked on major projects, such as the Bodleian Libraries exhibition 'Manifold Greatness: Oxford and the Making of the King James Bible', marking the 400th anniversary of its translation. Currently, she is engaged in a critical cultural biography of Jacobean playwright John Webster, which is supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. Moore has lectured on medieval and early modern subjects at various academic levels and has supervised numerous theses.
