Biography

Helen Neville is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she has been a faculty member since 2001. She also serves as a professor in African American Studies. Prior to her current position, she was a faculty member at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she co-founded and co-directed the Center for Multicultural Research, Training, and Consultation. Dr. Neville has held significant leadership roles both on campus and nationally, being a Provost Fellow and participating in the CIC/Big 10 Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Academy. She is currently the president-elect of the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity, and Race, and has co-edited five books, and authored or co-authored over 90 journal articles and book chapters focused on race, racism, racial identity, and diversity issues related to well-being. Her research has appeared in various renowned journals, including the Journal of Counseling Psychology and the Journal of Black Psychology. Throughout her career, she has received multiple awards for her contributions to psychology and mentoring, including the APA Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest and the Fulbright Scholar Award. Her current research centers on the intersections of racial ideology and identity, particularly Black racial identity and color-blind racial ideology.
