Biography

Professor Helen Rizos leads the Precision Cancer Therapy research team at Macquarie University, where she is also the Principal Investigator for the Macquarie University Cancer Biobank. Helen graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of New South Wales and completed her PhD at Macquarie University. She joined the Melanoma Research Group at Westmead Institute for Medical Research in 1995 and became an independent group leader in 2000. Additionally, she is a faculty member at the Melanoma Institute Australia and co-leads the Advanced Melanoma research theme. Since joining Macquarie University in 2013, she has served as the Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences from 2014 to 2021 and was awarded Senior Research Fellowships from the Cancer Institute NSW and the National Health and Medical Research Council. Her research interests focus on understanding melanoma oncogenic signaling mechanisms, treatment resistance, and the development of liquid biomarker signatures to identify high-risk melanoma patients. She has contributed to significant findings in the field, including the role of intratumoural heterogeneity in therapy resistance and the clinical utility of ctDNA in predicting patient outcomes.
