Biography

Helen Stoddart graduated from Glasgow University with an M.A. in English Literature and Film and Television Studies. She then pursued her Ph.D. at the University of Reading, focusing on Gothic fictions. Before joining the University of Glasgow in 2009, she worked at Keele University. Her research primarily encompasses post-1945 contemporary novels, with strong interests in film and circus. Stoddart has produced a range of publications on subjects including Muriel Spark, Federico Fellini, Isak Dinesen, tattoos, Angela Carter, film authorship theory, A.L. Kennedy, ghost stories, Charles Dickens, and early cinema. Her notable works include the monograph 'Rings of Desire: Circus History and Representation' (2000) which reflects her ongoing interest in the history and representation of circus bodies. She has also edited a collection of essays on Muriel Spark, and her current research includes a book-length study of Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet. Additionally, Stoddart heads the English Literature department, contributing significantly to the field of contemporary fiction.
